The pre-prototype is up

May 13th, 2012

WORK IN PROGRESS! WORK IN PROGRESS! DID I TELL YOU THIS IS WORK IN PROGRESS? BECAUSE IT IS!
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11238180/WebPlayer.html

Now, the controls are quite easy.

WASD – To move
Space- Jump
E – Interact
G – Gasmask (No use yet)
M1 – Attack

Be sure to left-click the window and click “fullscreen” to get a larger image and better preformance.

Please excuse just how rough this is and leave comments.
I will try to update it every now and then, hopefully.

Looking really good! Has a nice oldschool touch to it.
I would however exchange the particle flames with animatioed billboard flames – will certainly give even more oldschool goodness to the game.
You are at a point where usability really starts to matter. I have two monitors and my mouse was constantly outside of the webplayer (even though I had fullscreen) and some feedback (sound!) is really essential – when picking up gold, jumping, swimming… but you probably know that already ;)
    Ever thought about head/camera-bobbing?

I really like how far you’ve come! Go on, push forward and finish it!

Thanks. I know what you mean, but it bears repeating. It’s important for me to know what people want even though I can take fair stabs at what they’d want.

Hmmm, unsure about the double-screen, but I will look into that.

Camera bobbing is more of a modern FPS staple. But there is some level of it in a few games of that era, I might try it some time.

Wow, it’s really great, I agree with Marko that the mouse should stay put, it’s really shaping up, keep up the good work :D
By the way, is it intentional to die after dropping a box in lava?

    • Littlenorwegians on said:

Ha, not intentional. I’ve basically not bothered to program
“When player touch lava, get damage”
      instead it’s just
      “When touch lava, get damage”
so you get damage every time something touches the lava. Will fix. ;)

I’m digging it so far, but a couple of things:

    - Navigating the main menu with the keyboard seems… kinda pointless. I get that it’s meant to be like the games you’re paying tribute to, but it’s such a tiny detail from those games. I think you can get away with using the good ol’ mouse.
    - The main character is tiny. :P
    - Maybe make the lava more punishing? I was able to just run right through it rather than using the boxes.
    - Sometimes when I was trying to jump onto something, I would get pushed back in the opposite direction. Like the wall was actually shoving me mid-air.
-Maybe downsize the crates a tiny bit so you don’t need a running jump to get onto them? It’s fine when you’re on the ground, but becomes a problem when you’re to jump from one crate onto another.

Also… it seems odd this demo hasn’t been advertised more. Couldn’t hurt to make a post on the TSE forums, The Till or whatever forums you visit. ;)

Well, reason for that is that this prototype is so UNGODLY broken I don’t really want to show it to a larger crowd just yet.

      Lava will be more punishing.

I think I will have character slide so your character can move just a bit when he’s in the air. That way it’s easy to be next to a box, jump and then land on the box.

Menu will still use keyboard, but you will be able to use the arrowkeys, too. I AM trying to emulate games of that era and I am sticking to it. Might add a little instructive text.

I finally tried out your fuckgame.

So apparently my choice of attacking is throwing eggs while jerking a stick. I suppose it works. Friggin’ erased that green thing from existence. Not that it was necessary to resort to this, as he can apparently see through space and time as he kept going towards me no matter where I was, leading the dumbass to fall into the hole.

Though I prefer doing it that way. Guy was scary as poop. Almost as scary as Trip!

Now I go to lift crates and… Holy crap, I carry them over my head like Noah in that videogame? I feel so damn powerful!

Here’s cardboard merchant, and apparently he’s got some sort of wishing well. Just throw money into the goblet and your cancer’s gone! Nice try water at draining my lifeforce!

Step into lava? Pfft. 5 hit points. Fuck you lava.

And then I reached buttons and I guess I beat the game.

    10/10

Really nice job so far, my only comment is that the acceleration when walking seems a bit off, like I think it should be more quick start to low momentum, then slow increase of pace as opposed to now, where it’s slow “take-off” and then suddenly an increase to fast speeds, which makes it difficult to manoeuvre around edges and take small steps. I really enjoy the style of the game, keep up the good work!
